Hi, I'm new here, and I'm trying my first sock! I have got the book "Sansational Knitted Socks" by Charlene Schurch, and I'm working on her Class Sock, the sock she teaches in her beginning sock class. I got past the heel turn, and then when I got to the gusset part, I got all mixed up, and it seemed the only way to continue was to cut the yarn and start going with a new tail. Is this normal? I could not see how to keep going if I didn't cut it. This is what a friend told me to do. She has knitted a pair of socks in the past (only one pair, mind you, not SUPER experienced). The directions say nothing about cutting the yarn! I'm feeling discouraged because I don't think I'm a dumb person, and I've knit many things, including a vest, ponchos, a sweater, hats, and many scarves, of course. And I really want to learn socks, but it's just baffling to me.

It is currently snowing and looks like chicken feathers coming down, so I bailed back into the house to work on the computer for a little bit and try to ignore what I see coming down. I do believe the calendar shows it is past the Spring Equinox, but Mother Nature up here has decided she will do as she wants for now. Such is the normal for living up here on our mountain, where I have seen it snow in July.

I call myself 'tenzicut' on the net and I live on a 40 acre farm with my family ("hubby" and 2 teenage boys) in the bush in northern British Columbia, Canada. Moose and bear are more of our neighbors than humans. We raise alot of our own food and all of our own meat.

I currently do not have any fiber animals, but usually I have Horned Dorset & Jacob sheep and English Angoras. I also trade handshearing for fiber from many of my friends who are terrified of shearing.

I have a Ashford and a Luet S-10 and then I knit socks.. pretty much nothing else but boot socks.. but I do make sure they are pretty bootsocks *S*

I worked as a veterinary technican for 20-some years until I was dumb and fractured my back in 4 places 18 months ago. Laying on a sofa for 10 months was driving me crazy, so I am now an editor for an organic homesteading magazine.

Besides the animals, I love to cook, knit and handspin on my spinning wheels, read anything voraciously, hike and rock climb.

I'll just put these in order. :)

1. I've been on a knitting spree lately....and kinda got a callus on one of my fingers (I use it to push the needle, so it kept getting poked with the sharp end). Anyone have a way of preventing this? Aside from getting a new method of knitting?

2. I've forced myself on a hiatus from knitting, since after my sweater and two hats...my right wrist is now very sore. Aside from adding advil to my diet and icing, any suggestions on what I can do to make it better?

3. An actual pattern question! I'm going to be working on a hat for my mom (when my college papers are done), and just to be prepared....can anyone help me figure out what these instructions mean in simpler terms?

"With dpn pick up 150 sts from cast on edge.
Fold with purl sides together, Knit 1st from circular needle together with 1 st from dpn, repeat to end of round. (You are making the hem on the roll up brim) The moose pattern will be on the inside until you roll up the brim."

Here's the pattern, if it'll help: http://knitting.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://knitlist.com/96gift/gmhat.htm

Thanks! Time to rush to school.

I'm working on the brim of a hat from knitty.com and I can't wrap my head around W&T. I seem to get it, but what's confusing me is if it's a short row for the brim, what happens to the stitches AFTER the wrap because the instructions tell you to turn and work the row. In other words will I always have stitches on the left needle not to be worked on and what do I do with those eventually. This seems simple, but there's something I'm missing. Please help aggggggghhhhhhhh!

A PRACTICAL PULLOVER

Materials: 9oz. of Jaeger "Feather-Fleck" (9d. per oz.), and 1 pair each of No. 9 and No. 12 Jaeger knitting needles.
Measurements: Length from shoulder at armhole edge, 19.5 inches; width all round under the arms, 37 inches; length of sleeve seam, 18.5 inches.
Tension: 7 stitches to 1 inch in width, and 21 rows to 2 inches in depth.
Abbreviations: K. = knit; p. = purl; sts. = stitches; rep. = repeat; sl. = slip; tog. = together; inc. = increase or increasing; dec. = decrease or decreasing.
Casting-on: If you cast on with two needles work into the back of all cast-on sts. to produce firm edges, but if you use the thumb method this is not necessary.

THE BACK
Begin at the lower edge. Cast on 130 sts. using No. 12 needles and work 3 inches in k.1, p.1 rib. Change to No. 9 needles and the pattern as follows: 1st row - SI.1, k. to end. 2nd row - SI. 1, * k.1, p.1. Rep. from * finishing k.1. 3rd row - Sl.1, k. to end. 4th row -Sl.1, * p.1, k.1. Rep. from * finishing k.2. These 4 rows form the pattern and are rep. throughout. Continue in pattern until the work measures 12 inches from the beginning, finishing with the work right side towards you.
The Armhole Shaping: Cast off 4 sts. at the beginning of the next 8 rows (98 sts.). Continue without dec. until the armholes measure 7.5 inches on the straight, finishing with the work right side towards you.
The Neck and Shoulder Shaping: Next row - Pattern 24, cast off 50, pattern 23. Continue on the last 24 sts., casting off 6 sts. at the beginning of the next row, then on every alternate row until all sts. are cast off. Join the wool to the inside edge of the other side and work this up to match the first.

THE FRONT
Work this exactly like the back until the work, measures 11 inches from the beginning, finishing with the work right side towards you.
The Neck Shaping: Next row - Pattern 65 sts., turn (leaving the remaining sts. on a st. holder). Continue on the last 65 sts., dec. 1 st. at the beginning of the next row, then on every 4th row following until the work measures 12 inches from the beginning, finishing with the work right side towards you.
The Armhole Shaping: Cast off 4 sts. at the beginning of the next 4 alternate rows. But at the same time continue dec. at the neck edge until 44 sts. remain. Now dec. 1 st. at the neck edge on every 3rd row until 24 sts. remain. Continue without dec. until the armhole measures 7.5 inches on the straight, finishing with the work right side towards you.
The Shoulder Shaping: Cast off 6 sts. at the beginning of the next row, then on every alternate row until all sts. are cast off. Join the wool to the inside edge of the other side and work up this to match the first.

THE SLEEVES
Begin at the lower edge. Cast on 60 sts. using No. 12 needles and work 2.5 inches in k.1, p.1 rib. Change to No. 9 needles and the pattern, inc. 1 st. at both ends of the 7th row, then on every 8th row following until there are 96 sts. on the needle. Continue without inc. until the work measures 18 inches from the beginning, measured down the centre. Now shape the top by casting off 2 sts. at the beginning of every row until 12 sts. remain. Cast off.

THE NECK BAND
Cast on 190 sts. using No. 12 needles and work 10 rows in k.1, p.1 rib, dec.1 st. at both ends of every row. Cast off.

THE MAKING UP
Press the work on the wrong side with a warm iron and damp cloth. Join the shoulders, sew in the sleeves, and press the seams. Sew up the side and sleeve seams, and press them. Join the neck band, then sew the band round the neck edge and press the seams.

finally got some needles and yarn and began learning to knit this week. My ex girlfriend loves knitting, and got me hooked on it. There's a nice little yarn shop on Tujunga ave in Studio City that she spied one afternoon when we visited Aroma Cafe so I started wandering in after we broke up. At first I was thinking of buying something that she would like as a gift so that maybe we could get back together. That's probably not a good idea. Meanwhile I got to know the people who owned the store and it became a favorite place to hang out. The owner started asking me when I was going to start knitting. "Are you going to knit today?" Well this week I finally said yes. I picked out some debbie bliss alpaca silk and some #10 bamboo needles, learned how to cast on and started practicing on a ball of "pink" yarn that Tiffany gave me. I can't tell you how many times I've cast on and ripped out just two or three rows because I've done something screwy. Monday night after a simple lesson I went home and practiced through two movies. Didn't see much of the movies. Finally called it a night and had the best sleep ever. Who knew?

Ok its lunch time. Time to knit a few rows.

hello! i am making my first shirt and am having a problem figuring out the instructions. the pattern is for a dropped-stitch "ladder" tank top from the stich n' bitch nation book.

with much ado about binding off (that's where you drop the stitches that make the ladders), i've managed to finish the left side. now i need to work with 33 reserved stitches to finish the right side. problem is, i don't understand the instructions and am hoping someone can help.

here are the instructions:
Transfer holder sts to needle and work as for right side, connecting yarn at neck edge and beg with a WS row, reversing shaping.
All WS rows: P
Next RS row: BO4, k to end
Next RS row: BO3, DBO2, k to end
Next RS row: DBO2, BO3, k to end
Next RS row: BO3, DB02, k to end
Next RS row: BO1, DBO2, BO1, k to end
Next RS row: BO3, k to end
Next RS row: BO2, DBO2, BO1, DBO2, BO6

(DBO2 is the dropped stitch pattern, you drop a stitch, then pick up the ladder, knit into front and back and bind off those stitches)

starting at "All WS rows" part, this is what i used to create the left side. what i don't understand is how to "reverse shaping" to complete the right side. do i do something to reverse the pattern or something?

any help appreciated! kate

Here's my dilemna... my sister has taken up knitting, she's gotten very good and is fond of making scarves for people. She loves working with a variety of yarns, and prefers to mix multiple yarns in a single scarf. She has made me 2 scarves where I love one of the yarns, but really don't like the second one. It makes the scarves very bulky and rather unwearable. I can't ask her to re-do them because it would hurt her feelings and she'd resent it, I know.

So I've decided I need to learn to knit so I can make these scarves wearable (she uses very expensive yarn). Will the yarn still be knit-able once it's been made into a scarf and then unravelled? What do you recommend is the best approach to learning?

I wish I could just wear the darned things as is and get over it, but they are so bulky I know they'll just take up space in my drawer cuz they are uncomfortable to wear. I feel like such a bitch.

https://shop.theanimalrescuesite.com/store/category.do?categoryId=435&link=Store_ARS_LeftNav_435&siteId=310

However, there's no information on yardage, or even needle suggestions. My guage swatch gave me 12 sts x 16 rows for 4"x4" using a 6 mm (US 10) needle.

I came up with a yardage estimate using this information:

http://secure.elann.com/productdisp.asp?NAME=Peruvian+Collection+Pure+Alpaca&Cat=&ProductType=5&Count=1

If this pure alpaca yarn goes for 100 m (109 yds) per 50 g, I have 3 x 150 g balls, which would be 900 m of my bouclé alpaca. I think that's enough for a light sweater. Thoughts, anyone?

In any case, those charitable yarns seem like quite a good deal.

A woman came up to me last night at my local knitting group with a stocking some woman had made for her family years ago. The woman has since passed, and she would like to try and re-create the stocking.

I could probably borrow the stocking from her and count out all the stitches and recreate the pattern for her. But frankly that’s a lot of work if the pattern is already available out there some where for me to just give her. Unfortunately, my google-fu is failing me this morning, so I turn to you wonderful people for help

The leg of the stocking was knit flat; the top was white with red letters for the child's name. Then green leg with an intarsia Santa face, it was then seamed and the foot was done as a normal sock.

A few notes: it was rather small, only about the length of my fore arm. It was knit with worsted or finer yarn. The face was centered over to top of the foot part. The foot part was MUCH smaller in proportion to the leg. There were three bells attached to the toe of the stocking. And Santa's beard/eyebrows were done in the most amazingly soft fluffy angora like yarn, although I'm not sure if this was explicitly part of the pattern.

http://www.yarnia.com/sachstpavilo.html this is very close to the face on the stocking, fuzzy beard and all, although nothing else is remotely close.

So far I have made a scarf (of course) and something I've designated to be an arm warmer (that has a skull and crossbones design that I'm pretty proud of :). Anyway, I think maybe I'm missing something when it comes to binding off. I've followed the directions in my book, but I don't think my end result is the desired result. It works, but looks funny to me.
I thought maybe someone could explain it to me in their own words and maybe that will make more sense.

greetings all - I've just undergone a difficult transition in knitting - I'd previously been a 'thrower'; knitting in the English style (yarn in the right hand, throwing the yarn over the needle for the knit stitch) - but I KNOW this is so much slower, so I've been teaching myself the European method (yarn held in the left hand, hands never leaving the needle.) I'm finding it a very difficult change, but it is going faster.

What's strange is that it's far easier to do the purl stitches from the BACK of the stitch instead of the front. It is making the knitting tighter, and I think technically I'm no longer knitting 'stockinette' but rather something called Italian Knitting (I get confused with the names because the books all call them different things...)

Has anyone had this problem? Or is it a blessing in disguise? All told, having the yarn in the left hand does indeed make the knitting move along far smoother, it's just tricky to get used to keeping the tension correct and constant. I've struggled for a few days to get used to it and now I finally think I am.
i took a sweater knitting class. which was really cool. but i forgot most of it. and i don't want to retake the class due to the expense.

but the teacher that taught the class was amazing. a certified Master knitter.

my question to you is should i try to do alterations as i go? and if so...how do i do that?

and gauge..i get so confused about gauge...i have that litle metal gauge tool and everything...but i don't know how to count the little v's or the little bumps i have a hard time seeing where one stitich ends and the other begins.
a) if she could do some knitting on a project I am working on, (I am working on several pairs of socks, on 4 needles) and
Being a semi-brave soul... (and knowing I could undo any mistakes she made...) I handed her one of the socks I am working on, (as she had never done multi-needle knitting) and explained that all you are really doing is working from one needle to another, and that the other needles were just place holders, which was an 'ahha' for her..., and then showed her how to cast off...
