What are you Knitting?

We have been very quiet. I've just been slowly knitting in the heat I'm still working on a poncho with baby cables that I hope to enter in the county fair. What is everyone else making?

baby blanket...for my friend Lawa. Very easy, but I've managed to mess up a couple of times. It's not too bad (4 diff. rows, rep 3, knit), but I have to cast on 216 sts EVERY time I mess up. Grrr grrr. Will share once it's done, with pic!

Just joined this tribe... I'm a spinner, weaver, knitter and crocheter, right now I'm working on socks... been doing the cottage socks pattern that is available thru lionbrand.com... its a neat pattern, and works up super fast.

I was knitting fingerless gloves for the class I teach, then some more for gifts. I also just finished a sweater for my husband out of yummy alpaca. Now I'm doing scarves for my sister, mom & daughters.

Elizabeth, what pattern do you use for the fingerless gloves? A friend of mine wants me to make her a pair... (which I foolishly said sure... it will be a 'challenge'...) and now I need to find a pattern NOW!

Thanks... I think :-) I'm now working on a pair of toe-up socks from sport weight poly/wool blend in shades of blues... was working on them on the bus the other night, and had someone ask me what I was making, and when I replied socks... the sarcastic response was ... who would want to wear those... grrrrrrr... but they are coming out nice, and I'll post a pix of them and the sweater that I just finished next week!

Actually for fingerless gloves I'm using a pattern I made up myself. They are very easy to make and only take a couple of hours. This pattern is for gloves that are truly fingerless (not tipless) you need worsted weight yarn with a gauge of 5 sts-1". I used #6 dps. Some yarns that work really well with it are New Tweed by Tahki, Handpaint by Brown Sheep, and 1824 Wool from Mission Falls.
You just cast on 38 stitches (for an average sized woman) join into a round and knit in k1 p1 rib for desired cuff length (if you wish to use a k2,p2 rib you can to knit 36 stitches and add the 2 extra stitches later on your first round of stockinette stitch).
Switch to st st and knit until the total length is 6", mark the thumb by knitting 7 stitches with contrasting waste yarn. Then move the 7 stitches back onto left needle and continue knitting with main color.
Knit in st st until the whole piece measures 7 1/2"
Switch to k1,p1 rib and knit 4 rounds.
          Bind off.
Now pull out the contrasting yarn used to mark the thumb. Leaving a 4" tail attach yarn and knit 7 stitches from the bottom of the thumb, pick up and knit one stitch from the side and knit 8 stitches from the top of the thumb, pick up one more stitch from the other side.
Knit in st st until 1/2" short of the desired thumb length and switch to k1,p1 rib. Bind off.
Use the 4" tail at the thumb base tighten up any little holes left there.
Weave in ends. Voila! a glove!

I want to know how the toe up socks go, I've been meaning to try them. Will you add a heel after the rest is done? Did you see the sock pattern for toe up socks in the new issue of Spin Off? I want to try spinning a special sock yarn like described in the article.

My advice is ignore people who don't think hand knit socks are great. They are stupid!

The sock came out well, I've added it to my pictures... and I'm working on the 2nd sock, plus a glove that wants to be too big... I'm using size 3 needles and I think I need to rip it out again, and instead of 52 stitches, cast on 48... but I may also leave it until the weekend, and see what the person I am making the 'real ones'for says about the size...

The heel on the sock, I did by way of short row heel... then I did a k1 p1 cuff.

Sunday I had a super neat thing happen, I was at a community yule celebration, and had a shop owner ask me if I would be willing to sell some of my socks on commission! I had made up the Lion Brand cottage socks for the raffle that we have... and folks were stuffing the ticket cup for the socks! Definate ego stroke!

thanks, I think I'm going to try to write up what I did... as in how to do it again, and call it who woud want to wear 'those' socks... I'm almost done with the 2nd sock, and will probably wear them tomorrow!

The glove on the other hand has been ripped out (again) and re-started, on size 2's... which is what the yarn wanted any way!

Ah, if only one day I will be able to knit a glove...alas, still sticking to my afghans (2005 watch out!).

..speaking of which, off the tribe and back to the kintting, I have to, MUST, finish by the end of the week....

                  If it's nice I'll post a pic!

(as for the baby blanket[see previous post], no pic, so you know what that means, right?)

                    Thu, December 16, 2004 - 5:22 PM
Well... the who would want to wear 'those' socks are great... I definately have to write up the pattern... simple but... fun... and do have a name for them... (who would want to wear 'those' ... ME). I had used semi-patterned fiber, and the pattern was the same on both feet... I don't think I could do that again if I tried!

The glove on the other hand is giving me fits.. or rather not fitting right... still too big, but I'm going to leave it be, and let the person I am making the gloves for try it on to see how much too big it is on her... then go from there!

I hope I get through the next week. I have just made two scarves in two days and have to finish knitting one pair of gloves, a pair of leggings, and a hat and another scarf before Xmas. If only I didn't have to work tomorrow! But I think I can go to the tribal fusion faire on Saturday and plant my bottom to watch dancing and knit the whole day! I must be out of my mind.
Margie, please print your pattern when you have time.
Pensive Ro the glove pattern I posted is super easy. It's way faster than afgans.

Nice to meet you RaeAnn. I am doing a Moebius scarf right now. It's amazing somehow the cast on is in the middle and the two edges are knitted out at once. Very weird! Everyone should try it! When I get some fatter & longer circular needles I'm going to make one out of handspun.
      Gosh I'm easily amused!

welcom to the new folks... I'm slowly slowly getting back into the knitting, as I tripped and fell 5 weeks ago and broke my hand... the doc took the cast off after 3 weeks and said that I could start doing range of motion... and I showed him how I knitted... which he said was a perfect way to free up the wrist and the like... so... currently I am working on a pair of leg warmers, using size 13 dp's... they were 'killer' before I broke my hand, and they are worse now... I am also working on a pair of toe up socks using plymoth encore with a bluish base which goes from a goldenrod to an orange red to a dark green colorway ply. When they are done I'll post a pix of them!

Oh wow... broke your hand?! I'm happy you're doing better -- I broke (shattered really) my thumb about 5 years ago, and that kind of pain is just unbelievable!

And... sz 13 dpn's? Wow. I've never used bigger than sz 8 dpn's and even then it was hard to do. Good luck w/ your knitting!

I'm new to knitting, but my first project (excluding the lumpy square I used to practice stitches) is a "textured stripe" scarf. I'm doing a stockinette stitch and switching the knit side to the purl side every few rows, so I get bumpy and smooth stripes. The only problem I'm having is that the edges curl, so I'm thinking of adding a trim to cover that up. I just hope it's not too much. It's already variegated, and striped, and now it's going to have trim? I'll have to look for a neutral colored yarn for the trim, so I don't look like an insane--yet warm--clown.

Hi, I'm new to this tribe, and to Tribe in general. I'm one of those short attention span knitters, so I have a lot of things started, but few finished. Shawl, dish towel, fingerless gloves in hemp, spinning some silk to knit into baby booties. There's never enough time in the day to knit more than a little bit.

i'm not finished with my bag yet, but i've started working on a light scarve with some really fuzzy yarn. my mom thought it was mohair. it has a nice basket weave pattern on it, but because of the fuzziness of the yarn, the pattern is very subtle.

I have just finished knitting a poo. (a big long brown scarf with fringe) I am now sewing on the little kernals of corn. I am also on the prowl for some sunflower seed shaped beads to add to the mix. Ill post a picture when it's complete. On a not so disgusting note, I have just started a baby blanket for my friends pug puppy.

Matching hat and scarf, in Gothic Homespun from Lions Brand (a gorgeous purple/black color), even though I won't be able to wear them until November or December, in Texas.

Also, I've started on washcloths as part of christmas gifts for friends & co-workers, to be paired with wonderful soaps.

    1) Union Jack dog sweater
    2) Espresso coloured cabled sweater (for me)
    3) Red and white striped sweater (for me)
    4) Scarf for one of the girls I coach in high school rugby
    5) Afghan for a friend
    6) Scarf (for whoever)
    7) Scarf (for whoever)
    8) Lilac dog sweater (ordered from a fashion show I just put items in)
    9) Black hat for a friend

Okay, scary, I've never put in writing how much I've got going on. Varying levels of difficulty, attention span required, etc. I always have lots on the go - I always joke I'm an ADD knitter. Once I get close to finishing something though, I'm dedicated to that one project.

But at least I can say that I haven't NOT finished something, some just take longer than others to finish...

    Hello folks.

New here (and to Tribe), and I'm knitting what might turn out to be a jacket of some sort out of Noro Kureyon. Started crocheting some granny squares & triangles and thought they'd look kinda cool framed by knitting on a jacket. Maybe useful, maybe just a big pile o' yarn in the end. Either way, I'm having fun.

hi all... be safe this memorial day... my safety is being in Long Beach with one of my best buds and knitting... I finished a pair of socks that I had started back in the beginning of April out of some mauve wool yarn that a friend of mine saw at one of the lys's and said 'that color is so you...' I had a design in mind to which it said no... tried a differen design, and it still said no... finally settled on top down 2x (k2 p2) ribbing, short anklets, and literally had 2 yds left from one of the skeins and 1 yd left from the other skein when I finished the socks... the skeins were 50 grams, approx 105 yds. The yarn was dk weight, Cleckheaton country 8ply from Austrailia.

Just joined this Tribe (silly me, I'm on Crafty Vixens but not Knit N Purl!).

I'm in the middle (ok, more like 10% in, not really the middle yet) of a double-heart scarf.

I took the pattern from the heart scarf here (www.marblehead.net/amy/knit...surp.pdf) (which I knitted up with Blue Sky Alpaca organic cotton: smaller but soft and yummy) and altered it slightly in the process of doubling it to make it nice and wide for a friend.

My stepmom conned me into making her two scarves, but they'll be quick ones. I did, at least, convince her that the heart pattern wouldn't look good with that yarn, so I'm home free with garter-stitch :)

After the double-heart scarf, I'll be making my first non-rectangular project, a tank top! Yikes!

I'm knitting a bag with some yarn I found at a thrift store. Black mohair and a blue linen-cotton blend. This is only my second knitting project--my first was a scarf of course. I simply made some rectangles in various shapes for the current project, and now I'm sewing them together. I plan on also lining it with something--not sure what yet, I'm going to see what there is at the fabric store.

I still got several pattern repeats of the Diamond Shawl from the Folk Shawls book sitting on a circular needle.... But that hurts my eyes.

But currently I'm working on a ribbed and cabled sweater called "Torsades Geantes" from the September/October issue of the French magazine, "Modes et Travaux."

i just made a really nice loose knit jumper with flared sleeves. I'd been looking for one for ages, and i just sat down & knitted it the other day - only took me 1 day and 1 1/2 balls of yarn!

now i'm making one for my bro's girlfriend...she's a couple of sizes bigger than me and i've never knitted to fit anyone else (apart from scarves!) so it'll be a challenge as she lives in a different county than me...lol

i'm also in the procaess of making a 'mime' scarf. it rocks...i'l post a pic when it's done!

I just completed a gray wool/angora scarf and now I am working on a wool lap throw.

The problem is, I only know how to knit but not purl. :(
    • Re: What are you Knitting?

      Sat, October 15, 2005 - 4:49 PM
But purling's so easy -- you just knit inside out :)

No, really, it's easier than it often sounds. Assuming you're right-handed, here's what you do:
      1) bring the yarn to the front of your work -- with knitting, you usually have it in the back of the work, so bring the yarn, between the work and the needle, through to the front (don't wrap it around anything)
      2) put the right needle through the front (towards you) part of the loop you want to purl, so the pointy end of the needle sticks out through the left hand side and in front of the left needle
      3) wrap the yarn around from back to front (right-left-right) around the right hand needle, so that it ends up between you and the needle and sticking up to the right
      4) push the right needle against the new yarn loop backwards through the original loop (which is still on the left needle)
      5) slip the original loop off the next needle
      6) congrats! you've purled! your new stitch should look the inverse of a knit stitch (i.e., what looked like a knit on the back, the purl looks like on the front and vice versa).

      Hope that helps!

I've been working on a pair of Yule stockings for my boyfriend and I, I started early in case I succumb to second sock syndrome.

I've also been making several crochet drink coasters, I just moved into an apartment with nice wood furniture, and would like to keep it nice.

Aside from that it's been the ubiquitous dishcloths, and a few really cute stuffed kitties.

I have added this little guy to my project pipeline:

    www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall0...Tbubby.html

Recently, I went on a Lion Brand rampage (not the best stuff, I know, but it's what's available at my nearest craft store, and the quality isn't so bad if you know what to get). I made a green Moebius scarf for a good friend of mine, then a chenille regular scarf for another friend of mine, and finally a sparkly mohair Moebius scarf for my sister-in-law for Christmas. With the leftover green yarn I'm making the little bear.

I also bought some recycled silk yarn (no, Lion Brand does not carry recycled silk yarn) and I'm making yet another Moebius scarf out of that.

Why so many Moebius scarves? Because I'm a nerd, and it's fun to knit a one-sided surface bounded by one edge on a circular needle. Also, chunky yarn and big needles make for quick projects.
