years ago my mother showed me a way to cast on by using a constrats color, then worked about 4 rows and somehow worked off the first row eliminating the constratsing color this gave a wonderful start to any garment. Then I didn't knit for awhile and forgot this method. Asked Mom and she has now forgotten. Does anyone out there know what I am talking about and advise as to how to do this. My mother and I would both appreciate th info.

Re: casting on
Wed, April 26, 2006 - 4:54 PMIt sounds like you're describing using a provisional cast on and creating a hem. You can cast on over a piece of waste yarn or onto a cable of a circular needle, then knit the length of the hem, create a turning row, knit the length of the hem again, then knit the cast on stitches together with the stitches on the needle. Clear as mud huh?
You'll find a knitted hem in this pattern:
www.magknits.com/warm05/pa.../shirt.htm
Instead of a regular cast on, use the "Invisible (Provisional) Cast-On" from this site
www.knittinghelp.com/knittin...ndex.php
and cast on over a cable needle. Then you won't have to pick up stitches to close the hem.

Re: casting on
Wed, April 26, 2006 - 7:09 PMJust went into both sites and neither one are what I am looking for. We didn't work around the contrast color it was what we started with and it was only 4 rows then somehow knitted it out. I know this makes absolutely no since. If I made since then I would have remembered what we did. Guess its time to grab some yorn and play. We did one row of the contrast color the went to the mail color, did something on the 5th row that worked out the contrast color. Any thanks and I will keep looking.
