I want to make some socks (not booties, but socks) for a friend's newborn but don't have a pattern for such tiny footwarmers. I could tweak another sock pattern, but I don't know how big -- or, rather, how small -- I should make them. Does anyone out here have a guide for teeny tiny socks?

Re: How big should baby socks be?
Mon, March 6, 2006 - 1:03 PMAlot depends on how big the baby's feet are!!!
Generally, using dk weight (dk - doubleknit) cast on 32 st,divide onto 4 needles, k1p1 for about 1 1/2 inches, make a heel using 16 stitches, then make the foot approx 2 1/2 ish inches?

Tue, March 7, 2006 - 7:37 AMHey auntie Pita you answered the same question for me last month!
Here's a sock recipe I use all the time:
www.psychoastronomy.org/pinsan...ml#more
You just knit a swatch, figure out the gauge, measure a baby ankle, and figure out how many loops to cast on. Very easy.
One tip: for baby socks and kid socks I reduce every round of the gusset rather than every other round.

Re: How big should baby socks be?
Wed, March 8, 2006 - 4:07 AMYou guys are great. Unfortunately, I can't measure the foot myself, which is why I was looking for a general guide. I'm going to give the short-row heel a shot. I've never done one before.
Thank you!
