finally got some needles and yarn and began learning to knit this week. My ex girlfriend loves knitting, and got me hooked on it. There's a nice little yarn shop on Tujunga ave in Studio City that she spied one afternoon when we visited Aroma Cafe so I started wandering in after we broke up. At first I was thinking of buying something that she would like as a gift so that maybe we could get back together. That's probably not a good idea. Meanwhile I got to know the people who owned the store and it became a favorite place to hang out. The owner started asking me when I was going to start knitting. "Are you going to knit today?" Well this week I finally said yes. I picked out some debbie bliss alpaca silk and some #10 bamboo needles, learned how to cast on and started practicing on a ball of "pink" yarn that Tiffany gave me. I can't tell you how many times I've cast on and ripped out just two or three rows because I've done something screwy. Monday night after a simple lesson I went home and practiced through two movies. Didn't see much of the movies. Finally called it a night and had the best sleep ever. Who knew?

Ok its lunch time. Time to knit a few rows.

enjoy

Welcome - it's fun stuff, isn't it? I enjoy the portability and the repetitive motions; I love working with my hands and just sort of getting into the groove.

So when are you going to make something? :)

      Hi Meghan,

I'm going to finish this little ball of cotton yarn first. Then I'm going to make a scarf out of some Black Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk. Just getting some practice now. Last night I went to a lecture on Projection and Transparency in relationships and decided what the hell this seems like a good place to knit. I discovered something wonderful. The repetition and surface focus that knitting requires opened my mind up to the lecture so that I was able to absorb the concepts much better than if I had just been listening. Wow! what a great thing.

      Thanks for the welcome. :)

        Welcome!!!

I love knitting, and am infact an obsessive sock knitter, and one of the things that I like about it is that it allows me to multi-task, knit and ... the only time that I really concentrate on the knitting is when I have a complex pattern, when I am turning a heel, or finishing the toes... it is great for concentration!

Looking forward to seeing your projects!

        Knitting in lectures is fabulous.

I had to get an insurance license for my job (I'm a compliance officer in a stock brokerage; don't ask), and the 54-hr class was *so* boring. At the lunch break of the first day, I asked the teacher if I could knit. I said I'd promise to listen, not read a pattern (I'd memorized it long ago), and take notes whenever I felt I needed it. But it was either let me knit all day long or watch me fidget and then stop paying attention. He said "do anything you want, as long as you don't fall asleep" :)

Got my commute project (for the next two months, I'd estimated) done before the fourth day's lunch break :) (And I passed the test and the first time and got my license.)

And the best benefit of all -- even though you're relaxing, even though you're "just watching a movie" or sitting on the train, you're *still* being productive -- you're actually making something!

Aaah, and you're even starting with cotton! Just in case you didn't know - cotton is a bit harder to work with than some other fibers because it has less stretch. :) I did the same thing though - started with a ball of cotton, and was so pleasantly surprised at how wool knitted up compared to it!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was thinking that a good wool had to be much easier than this string I'm working with now. I'm excited about using the alpaca silk from Debbie Bliss.

    Philip, Good for you!

Men who knit ROCK! I Started knitting during a very dynamic and transitional time in my life. I found it a great metaphor for life, love, and relationship. I wouldn't worry about the little mistakes at first... it's not going to be perfect, but do what you did the other night, and just keep plugging away, and you'll find your own rythm. At first, it was more about the process than the product, and as my technique improved, I moved from scarves, to hats, bags, baskets, and now I'm hooked on socks. I still love the the singularity of the fabric, how everything is connected, interlocking, and from a distance reveals pattern and form.

I've found 'tribe' to be a great resource in my knitting.

    Keep up the good work...

Learned a how to do a long tail cast on today and a purl stitch. This is fun, who knew? Now all I want to do is sit and knit... I see potential problems here. This is addictive behavior. I thought addictions were against the rulz...

Finished knitting the cotton stuff so I ripped it out to learn this new cast on technique and the k2 p2 ribbing that I want to do on the scarf I'm making with the debbie bliss alpaca silk. Yay! Won't spend too much time on this cotton stuff. Just enough to make sure I've got the sequence down.

I knit in class all the time. It makes me focus on the words better. Really, this is the coolest thing. I love men who knit. Big time.

I just finished a pair of cotton socks... It was my first time knitting a complete project with cotton, and I didn't particularly love it. I really does have a certain 'Squeak' to it, that was a little uncomprotable. I'm much happier with fine wools. Ahhhhh...

I started knitting about 3 years ago and have yet to finish something. I've done several crotcheing projects and love to sew.
I will, one day, finish a knitting project. My goal is a blanket. I already have all the yarn for it.

Ambitious for your first completed project :)

Like I should talk -- my first completed project was a giant stole for my bestest friend from childhood. I *coulda* bought her something nice, but no -- I have to use my newfound knitting skills and *make* her something. With the best yarn around. All 11 skeins of it.

My fellow-commuters were very impressed when I finally finished it :)

11 skeins??? What were you thinking!? All I'm looking at is 2 skeins and it seems like its going to be forever. Of course I haven't cast on yet. Haven't decided how wide a scarf I'm going to make. Haven't done a whole lot of anything. But I did learn how to cast on, how to knit, and how to purl. Time to go knit.

And the addiction begins... I have a sweater that I knitted several years ago, and it used approx 8 skeins, (just a bit over 7... ) and I'm knitting a box type basket, that will use 8 skeins... right now it is approx 12" x 15", and will felt down to 10" x 12" ish... but am using size 13 needles.... that is what eats up the yarn!

Oh yes, I am addicted. I've got my daughters into it too. My oldest is working faster on hers than I am mine, passed me right up.

Cast on the debbie bliss alpaca silk today and started my scarf. Wow! this stuff is way nicer to knit than that cotton I was using to practice on. The ladies at the yarn shop (Yarn Garden on Tujunga ave in Studio City) can't believe that I'm doing a seed stitch so easily already. I'm hooked, hooked, hooked.

                Good for you!
Yeah... for years, I only knew a knit stitch, and only made garter stitch scarves.... b o r i n g!
But once I learned to purl... and I realized that 90% of patterns are binary K & P, I was liberated.
I still make scarves, but now, I love to practive new stitch-patterns in scarves, and basically turn them into samplers.

I love knitting with silk/alpaca... I made some socks for my hubby, but he accidentally threw them in the wash, and felted them... oops.
I knit him some new ones with Trekking - Superwash wool/acrylic blend... wash away!
