in-the-round stitch problem

i'm trying to work in a stitch pattern other than stockinette, in the round. can anyone tell me how i should alter the stitch pattern so that it turns out correctly?

    What is your project? A hat? A sweater? Just goofin'? You may want to try playing around with different counts of ribbing, such as knit 3 purl three. Just be sure to knit the knit stitches when you get back around to them and purl the purls respectively.
