Re: Just learning
Tue, October 10, 2006 - 7:51 AMHow long have you been knitting? My advice is con't make it too hard. Knitting is all done with 2 stitches either knit or purl the most important thing to do after you have mastered these 2 stitches is keeping your tention even. Good luck and enjoy. -

Re: Just learning
Tue, October 10, 2006 - 7:55 AMI understood what you meant. But thanks for the correction. I can actually say that I began on Saturday. I finished a washrag last night. I love to do crafts with my hands. I sew and crochet already so I guess I am just looking for another outlet. Also I am 10 weeks pregnant so I hope to make some new things for the baby. -

Tue, October 10, 2006 - 9:26 AMIt is great doing a verity of crafts. As you become more comfortable with knitting you will probably find that some things you will prefer to knit and other crochet. Myself I prefer to crochet afgans but like knitted sweaters better. By the way congrats on the upcomming baby.

Re: Just learning
Tue, October 10, 2006 - 10:00 PMI've been knitting for about 2.5 years now, and I love it! There are SO many great baby patterns out there, and knitting for babies/children is a great way to learn new techniques on a smaller scale (like sweater construction, for example). A friend of mine is having a baby around Thanksgiving and I'm knitting this blanket for her young'n: www.joyknits.com/blankie.html
I was going to do this one: majorknitter.typepad.com/photo...t.html but then I read something about little fingers getting stuck in blankets with holes, so I decided to go with the basic rib check blanket. Classic pattern, and I got a gorgeous dark raspberry-colored chunky yarn to make it in. My friend decided to wait until birth to find out her baby's gender, so I'm hoping she doesn't think the color is too girly. I think it's a good unisex color and I'm pretty sure she'll like it, but then again I'm pretty "liberal" about the whole gender/color thing. Who says boys can't wear pink?? :)

Re: Just learning
Wed, October 11, 2006 - 4:59 PMcongrats on the baby!
i'm knitting a baby blanket also (blue and white) for my friends who are adopting an 18month baby boy.
i would have to say that this is the fastest knitting i have ever done. the secret is i'm using size 15 needles and super chunky yarn. a lady in my mon night knitting group is also making a baby blanket, but crocheting and using n sized hooks. it's going to take her much longer to finish and she was a little jealous when i told her that i had only started the blanket on fri night.
i'm so in love with big needles, it's so much quicker!

Re: Just learning
Tue, October 10, 2006 - 8:36 AMFor some bizarre reason, to me, I've found that knitting is easier than, say, crochet. No idea why, but I haven't been at it that long and I picked up on it fast (I also bead, crochet, sew and cross stitch). Right now, I'm working on an afghan kit from Mary Maxim (the store is in my state, so I can actually go look at what I want to get!). Once I got the "yo k1" thing, I was able to start flying on it.
Welcome to knitting! -

Re: Just learning
Mon, October 16, 2006 - 5:53 PMcongrats on the baby AND learning to knit. i have been doing it for almost 23 years now. it seems absurd when i think of it in those terms. i have really only learned how to do more than knit straight in the past 6 years. i am completely illiterate when it comes to reading patterns unfortunately so i have to rely on my imagination to make things like sweaters and socks. all i can say is be adventurous! you will discover you can figure just about anything out.
i am in agreeance over the big needles! i have just discovered them again (for the first time since i was 4) and love them. i think i never wanted to use them because i associated them with being a little kid and a beginner. you know, little kids and big crayons and thick pages in books.
i also just learned how to crochet last christmas after being very intimidated by it. it is rather easy, but i still have to look at it when doing it, unlike knitting.
keep up the warmth making!
