Re: best way to get started knitting
Tue, January 4, 2005 - 6:27 AMI highly recomend classes given by local yarn shops... it is very much worth it to have that help and to SEE how it is done rather then instructions in a book

Tue, January 4, 2005 - 10:05 PMI totally agree with Wilde, here. Nothing beats sitting down and watch someone do it and then do it yourself. Of course, you might prefer the book approach...I don't have any to recommend though.
Happy knitting non the less!

Re: best way to get started knitting
Tue, January 4, 2005 - 9:03 PMMaybe you can find a local stitch n bitch group too. There is a website for that ... here it is... www.stitchnbitch.org/snb_groups.htm
Of course you could get a basic book some worsted weight yarn and maybe #10 needles and just try it out. One of my favorite knitting books is Knitting Without Tears by Elizabeth Zimmerman.
Happy Knitting!

Re: best way to get started knitting
Sun, January 9, 2005 - 9:53 PMI got started with a few things. I have several co-workers who knit and they basically gave me everything I needed to start. I also borrowed a copy of the Stitch n Bitch book which had diagrams and simple instructions. When the diagrams wouldn't make sense I'd ask a co-worker and vice versa.
I started out with some yarn and basically knitted a square. The square served no purpose other than practice so there was no pressure when I messed. Also, I've found knitting to be extremely forgiving (except for the dropped stitch).
Once you complete your first little square of fabric you'll be fine. -

Thu, January 20, 2005 - 1:31 PMThanks everyone, I told a few friends I was interested and one of them offered to send me a "starter kit." I'll also definitely be seeking out some lessons locally too. -

Re: best way to get started knitting
Mon, February 7, 2005 - 9:59 PMI know it sounds totally predictable, but I recommend "The Complete Idiots Guide to Knitting and Crocheting". It has great illustrations and some great patterns. It is also a great reference for anyone who knits. This book is how I got started, and boy did I catch on quickly with this reference. I do admit though, watching someone is beneficial. Good luck! :)
